On Friday, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake ripped through the northeastern coast of Japan, creating a tsunami that may have been as high as 20 meters in some places. Researchers at Harvard have found an interesting new visual illusion, called silencing. The basic idea of the illusion is that movement stops the human brain from processing visual changes to the periphery of what you’re focusing on.
